Fairchild Aircraft was an American aerospace manufacturer founded in 1925 by Sherman Fairchild. The company was known for producing innovative aircraft, including the Fairchild FC-1, one of the first U.S. planes with a fully enclosed cockpit and hydraulic landing gear. During World War II, Fairchild built military trainers like the PT-19 Cornell and transport aircraft such as the C-82 Packet and C-119 Flying Boxcar. In the postwar era, Fairchild acquired Republic Aviation, leading to the development of the A-10 Thunderbolt II, a legendary close air support aircraft. The company later merged into M7 Aerospace in 2003, marking the end of its independent operations.
